The institute’s organizational structure comprises the Research Department with four laboratories (Animal Biology; Physiology of Nutrition; Feed Quality; Animal Nutrition and Biotechnologies) and the Development Department with two units (the Pilot Plant for zoofort premixes and special compound feeds, and the Experimental Agro-Zootechnical Farm). These provide the framework for research activities and the technology transfer of their results, with operations supported by auxiliary units.

IBNA addresses a wide range of research directions and objectives—the effects of nutrition on the performance and health of farm animals (including immune status); the quality and safety of feeds and animal products; feed contaminants; breeding value estimation; the adaptation of livestock nutrition strategies to global changes; animal nutrition within the food chain (functional foods); and the use of animal models for human nutrition, among others. Each year, the institute generates dozens of research outputs (scientific papers, products, services, etc.) while ensuring their transfer to potential beneficiaries.

The institute conducts 30–40 research projects annually, within national and international RDI programs or funded by the private sector.
